George Washington & Martha Dandridge – 1759
Even though Martha Washington is addressed as the first First Lady of the United States, the title did not exist back when she was alive. On January 6, 1759, she married George Washington, who became the nation’s first president three decades later.
Even though photographs weren’t invented at the time, paintings such as the one above can give you an idea about how their nuptials went. Her excellent taste in fashion helped her put together a look with a yellow silk damask dress, paired with purple slippers with silver embellishments. As historians say, it was a “regal appearance.”
