The Departed (2006)
Despite winning four Academy Awards and a Golden Globe, Martin Scorsese’s unforgettable crime thriller, The Departed, got axed by China in 2006. The decision to ban the movie was made by a state-run distribution company, in light of a seemingly controversial scene in the film that mentions a Chinese plan to purchase advanced military computer equipment.
The Departed tells the story of a Hong Kong policeman who goes undercover to infiltrate a gang, while another gang member becomes a spy in the police. With Scorsese at the helm, the film featured a star-studded cast of actors like Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, and Matt Damon.
