How the Box Trap Was Designed
Russell’s booby-trapped box was a masterpiece of engineering. The firing pin was blocked by plates while the box itself was secured with a buckle fastened to the door’s knob. Once lifted, the plate would fall, creating a deafening sound. The firing pin would then release a 12-gauge shotgun shell that fires when raised.
Though it may sound frightening, all it could do was make a loud bang. The legality of the box was the real question. Russell’s DIY contraption could land him in hot water if considered a lethal weapon. Nonetheless, it’s hard not to admire the craftsmanship and creativity that went into building it.
