A Rudder That Was Too Small?

Here, we can see another vital part of the ship: its rudder. This mechanism serves to control the seacraft through steering and is usually fastened outside the hull. The Titanic’s rudder is described as an old-fashioned kingpost that isn’t far off from the ones used in a Spanish Galleon.

It was made of cast steel, measured a little over 78 feet, and weighed a hefty 101 tons. Some say that this rudder was rather too small for a ship the Titanic’s size, going as far as to speculate that it contributed to the accident that sank it.
