Harriet Beecher Stowe

Harriet Beecher Stowe, an American author and philanthropist, wrote the novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” which had a significant impact on public opinion against slavery and is credited as one of the contributing factors to the American Civil War. Born in Connecticut in 1811, she was the sixth of eleven children and received a traditional academic education, including a focus on languages, mathematics, and the Classics.

Following the success of her critically acclaimed book, she published several other works, including “Oldtown Folks and Dred,” as well as essays, short stories, novels, and textbooks. Although none of these gained as much recognition, she continued to receive widespread acclaim in her time.
