Dorothy Counts

Dorothy Counts-Scoggin, an American civil rights activist, was one of the earliest Black students to enroll at Harry Harding High School in Charlotte, North Carolina. However, due to harassment and threats to her safety, she was forced to leave after only four days. Her family sent her to an integrated school in Philadelphia to continue her education.

Despite this setback, her bravery and resilience in the face of adversity became an inspiration to many. She eventually returned to Charlotte and attended Johnson C. Smith University, where she earned her degree in Psychology. In 2010, the library at Harry Harding School was renamed the Dorothy Counts Library in her honor.
