The Queen’s Many Birthdays
Queen Elizabeth was born on April 21, 1926. That’s not when her subjects celebrate her birthday, though. In the UK, Her Majesty’s special day is commemorated on the second Saturday of June due to a tradition that goes back to the 1700s.
The custom came about to ensure the best weather for the festivities that come with a monarch’s birthday. June marks the end of spring and the beginning of summer in the queen’s home. Australians also celebrate the occasion during the same month, although it is technically winter there.
