There are many theories as to why Pete Townshend and The Who destroyed their instruments. One is because they were in direct competition with Jimi Hendrix, who set his guitars on fire. Another explanation might be that they did it so that their next show would be played on new instruments, making it different from the last one.
Townshend simply says it was artistic expression. He was all about that, especially when it came to the more than 100 songs he wrote for 12 albums, besides his solo material. He appeared in the Mick Fleetwood & Friends celebrate the music of Peter Green music special.
