Modern Times (1936)
Written, directed, and starred in by the legendary Charlie Chaplin, Modern Times is a classic 1936 silent film. Heralded as one of the last greatest silent films and set during the Great Depression, the film is centered on a fictional character who finds it challenging to come to terms with modern technology and human advancement.
Part melodrama, part slapstick comedy, Modern Times was Chaplin’s first attempt at an overtly political-themed motion picture. Its unflattering portrayal of the modern industrial society, coupled with allegedly promoting communism, meant that the film was banned in places like Germany and Italy.
