2012 (2009)
For several years, North Korea’s reclusive leader Kim Jong-il had been propagating the year 2012 as the golden era for the country. According to several reports, 2012 was widely believed to be a lucky year that would enable North Korea to become a rising superpower in the coming years.
After the release of 2012, a sci-fi adventure directed by Roland Emmerich, Pyongyang officials scrambled to prevent the locals from getting their hands on a copy. Fearing that the movie’s storyline could thwart their plans of becoming a superpower, the film was outlawed and several offenders who pirated and viewed it were charged with crimes committed against the state.
