Funny Girl (1968)
Directed by William Wyler, Funny Girl is a 1968 romantic musical and an adaptation of a book by author Isobel Lennart. The film’s lead roles are played by Barbra Streisand, a Jewish actress, and her male counterpart, Egyptian actor Omar Sharif.
Given that Streisand was a staunch supporter of Israel and the film’s release date happened to be at the height of political tensions and war between Israel and the Gulf states, Funny Girl was banned from screening in Egypt. For the 2021 Broadway revival of the ’60s film, Beanie Feldstein is set to star as Fanny Brice, the role originally played by Streisand.
