Milk (2008)
In Milk, actor Sean Penn ended up winning an Oscar for Best Actor for his role as Harvey Milk. The film was loosely based on the life of a gay activist who stood up for the rights of minority groups. In the movie (as well as in real life), Milk ends up running for and becoming the first openly gay elected official in California.
Despite its powerful message, the film was banned in Samoa without an explanation. Later, the country’s lead censor, Leiataua Niuapu, stated that the film had not been given the green light since it contradicted not only Samoan culture but also the population’s Christian beliefs.
