Battleship Potemkin (1925)

Infamous film director Sergei Eisenstein’s work has been controversial, to say the least. Heavily inspired by his Soviet roots, most of his work ended up being censored in several countries. This includes his most famous films, Strike and Battleship Potemkin, the latter being banned in most theaters worldwide.

When copies of the film arrived in France, the French customs was quick to burn all the tapes. In some parts of the U.S., Battleship Potemkin was banned due to fears of inciting American sailors for mutiny. Upon its arrival in Britain, the film was immediately banned as it was considered seditious and remained taboo until 1954.
