Boats Were Also Saved
When the Carpathia picked up survivors, its crew also preserved the lifeboats they rode in. With the additional 700 plus passengers aboard the vessel, its captain knew that he didn’t have enough boats to save everybody if a similar accident happened to them while sailing for New York City.
The boats were loaded onto the Carpathia’s foredeck, with some of them being hung over the ship’s side. Upon arriving at the Big Apple, the lifeboats were lowered into the water and left at the Chelsea piers of the White Star Line.
