Rowing To Safety
After a close call with death, the survivors finally reached the safety of the RMS Carpathia, which responded to the distress signals the Titanic sent. The steamship was about 58 miles away from the sinking luxury liner when its commander, Captain Arthur Henry Rostron, prepared it for rescue.
Dodging icebergs along the way, the Carpathia reached the Titanic’s location in about three hours after going at its top speed. It arrived at 3:30 a.m., an hour after the distressed ship sank, finding the 705 survivors left behind floating on lifeboats.
