It’s Our Little Secret

Imagine a world where a couple gets engaged but doesn’t tell anyone, and no one is bothered about it being kept a secret. That’s the world the Amish live in. It is tradition for a couple to keep an engagement a secret until July or August.

That’s just to tell family, who in turn will hold on to the secret until October when they notify the rest of the community about the impending nuptials. But there are telltale signs that a wedding is in the pipeline; just look for a newly painted house and gardens with celery in them.
