Something Homemade, Something Blue
In what is undoubtedly the ultimate non-western convention, Amish brides have to make their own dress. She also has to make dresses for the bridesmaids, called newehockers. This dress will become the bride’s eventual Sunday church dress and, ultimately, the dress she is buried in.
Weddings are also hosted on either a Tuesday or Thursday, leaving one day before for preparing and another day after for cleaning up. Why not Saturday, you ask? Because that would mean cleanup is left for Sunday, which is sacrilege since Sunday is a day for church.
