Bikini Atoll may seem like an island paradise today. But for a time in the ‘40s, it looked like hell on earth. It was the site of a series of bomb tests that included the detonation of 23 nuclear weapons. The declassified documents surrounding the incident showed the true horror of the incident.

Due to the damage the nukes caused on the atoll, its residents sued the United States in the ‘70s. The Bikinians won and were awarded $75 million in damages and another $90 million put in a trust fund to cover Bikini Atoll’s cleanup and its residents’ medical expenses.
