A Case Of Mistaken Identity That Killed 34 Americans
Such mistakes can go both ways. In the ‘60s, the spy ship USS Liberty was mistakenly attacked by four Israeli fighter jets while it was stationed in the Mediterranean. The sea vessel was practically defenseless as it was bombarded with attacks from both the sea and the air. When the smoke cleared, 34 Americans were found dead.
Israel acknowledged the error and ended up paying a significant amount of money in reparations. The country paid the survivors and the families of those who did $6.7 million. The United States also received $6 million for the loss of the ship.
