The Mushroom Cloud Of Destruction Left By A Hydrogen Bomb
Taken out of context, this photograph seems like a snapshot of a beautiful cloud formation, huh? In reality, though, this mushroom-shaped cloud was caused by the explosion of the world’s first hydrogen bomb in 1952. Detonated at Enewetak Atoll, the bomb was part of Project Ivy.
What this photo doesn’t show, though, is the brave pilot who flew his plane into this cloud of destruction. According to Air & Space Magazine, Lieutenant Colonel Paul H. Fackler found himself in a part of the main cloud. Fortunately, he got out safely, with none of his passengers getting sick.
