The Mapimi Silent Zone, Where Radio Waves Dare Not Enter
For the longest time, the Mapimí Silent Zone in Durango, Mexico, was the subject of many fantastical tales and urban legends. According to locals, radio waves can’t be transmitted within the zone, hence its name. This made it a popular tourist spot for those looking for paranormal thrills.
Declassified documents unveiled in 2013 seem to solve the mystery around the Mapimí Silent Zone. The files point to an accident involving a USAF rocket in 1970 as the source of the local legends. The fallen aircraft was carrying vials of cobalt 57, a radioactive isotope.
