Walt Whitman

Walter Whitman was a renowned writer, poet, and humanist, celebrated for his approach to historical realism, transcendentalism, and mastery of free verse, as well as his commitment to truth. While he authored several books, Whitman is best remembered for his then-controversial magnum opus, “Leaves of Grass.” He dedicated the majority of his life to modifying and expanding it, publishing multiple editions until his passing.

Whitman’s inspiration came from a blend of sources, including his admiration for Abraham Lincoln and his travels across America, witnessing hardships and caring for the wounded. Art historians say without Whitman, one cannot truly understand America, and his influence on poetry remains significant.
