John Quincy Adams

Before being elected as the sixth President of the United States, John Quincy Adams served in several capacities, including as a distinguished senator, astute lawyer, and diplomat. Even after he failed to win his reelection bid for a second term, he still remained involved in governance and won an election into the House of Representatives.

Adams is the first American president whose father previously held the esteemed position. Historians have said he was a more highly accomplished diplomat and Secretary of State than he was a President. However, his post-presidency is viewed more positively, considering his strong stance against slavery and infringements upon the rights of women and Native Americans.
