Help Finally Arrives
Ben’s friend had the vet over within minutes of picking them up. By this time, Felicia wasn’t moving anymore. The doctor approached her, ready for the examination, but Felicia began moving upon seeing them. The doctor decided that they needed to be sedated. Carrying mares are only given drugs and sedatives when they really need them.
This stems from concerns for the foal as they are unable to metabolize and isolate foreign substances yet. There haven’t been conclusive studies on the use of sedatives on gestating mares, which raised Ben’s concerns. However, this case was extremely urgent and required this step for the safety of the mare and foal.
