Evaluating the Options
Using sedatives or any drug for that matter, on pregnant mares comes with its risks. The possibility of Felicia and the foal surviving without assistance was pretty slim. Ben had to weigh his options critically. He didn’t want to lose his beloved horse, but he also wanted another one.
The animal doctor presented him with the different situations and explained the possible consequences of each choice. Mares that need cesarean sections often require sedatives for the procedure, so this was a fairly common thing. Ben agreed to go with the sedatives to give Felicia and the foal a better chance of survival.
