Why So Windy?
Antarctica’s climate is one of the driest and coldest out of all of the continents. The region is also famous for another dangerous reason – the katabatic winds. Due to gravity, the direction of the wind is from the ice sheets to the coasts. The speed of the fast gusts of air is estimated at a shocking 200 mph, making it the windiest place on Earth!
Since it is entirely covered by ice and there is next to no vegetation, the winds are quite dry and cold, rendering the place almost uninhabitable.
