“The Fat Man” That Brought Japan Down To Its Knees
You’ve seen pictures of the explosion and its aftermath. But we bet you’ve never seen this photo of the nuclear bomb, Fat Man, in transit at Tinian Island. It was the second bomb the United States detonated over Japan during World War II.
It dropped on Nagasaki and produced a 22-kiloton blast that killed an estimated 60,000 to 80,000 people, including those who later died of ill health. Combined with the earlier bombing of Hiroshima, the event practically brought Japan down to its knees. A few days later, Emperor Hirohito announced his country’s surrender, which marked the end of the war.
